Biodiversity Biodiversity and Application of Biotechnology in Agriculture
Head of the laboratory's speech
Welcome to the official website of the "Biodiversity and Application of Biotechnology in Agriculture" (BABDA) research laboratory — a newly established research unit within our faculty, created to address the growing need for scientific support in advancing the agricultural sector in our region.
The establishment of this lab is driven by multiple essential reasons, including the urgent demand for applied scientific research to develop agriculture both in quantity and quality. It also provides a stimulating environment for academic staff and postgraduate students to conduct research, especially given the lack of PhD programs within our faculty due to the absence of research laboratories. BABDA aims to enable participation in national research projects such as PRFU, and foster collaboration with socio-economic partners and research institutions at both the national and international levels.
Laboratory objectives
The BABDA laboratory focuses its scientific research on addressing environmental and agricultural challenges specific to the local ecosystem, such as soil types and water permeability issues. This includes the application of hydrogels to enhance soil quality. Furthermore, the lab emphasizes the valorization of local biodiversity and the chemo-diversity of plant products with pharmacological and nutritional properties. It also aims to apply modern biotechnological methods to improve the yield and quality of agricultural products for use in various life domains. A major research goal is the synthesis of new heterocyclic compounds with biological significance.

The objective of the research conducted by our team is to explore and valorize the biodiversity of microorganisms within the specific context of agriculture. We aim to deeply understand how these microorganisms play a crucial role in improving the health of agricultural soils. Indeed, they are essential for strengthening crop resilience to various stresses, whether biotic (such as diseases and pests) or abiotic (such as drought and salinity) Our approach stands out through the use of innovative methods in environmental microbiology, allowing for precise identification of beneficial microorganisms present in agricultural ecosystems. As part of our research, we also examine the complex interactions between these microorganisms, cultivated plants, and their environment. This includes studying intercellular communication mechanisms, beneficial microbial symbioses, and the impact of these interactions on overall crop health. In parallel, our goal is to develop practical applications from these discoveries to sustainably and ecologically optimize agricultural yields. Main Research Themes Proposed by the Team Exploration of microbial biodiversity Valorization of beneficial microorganisms Microbe-plant interactions Practical applications in agricultural microbiology Ecology of microbial communities in agricultural soils Optimization of agricultural systems through microorganisms Innovation and technology transfer in agricultural microbiology
