7.2.3 – Does your university as a body have a process for carbon management and reducing carbon dioxide emissions?

University Process for Carbon Management and Emission Reduction

The University of El Oued, as a body, has a formally documented and high-level process for carbon management and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, established through a Rector’s Statement and aligned with national and global sustainability goals.

Formal Commitment and Process

The university’s commitment is defined by the Rector’s formal pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2040. This goal is not merely an aspiration but the cornerstone of the university’s carbon management process. The Rector’s Statement affirms that this goal is integrated with Algeria’s national strategy for Sustainable Development and the national plan for Sustainable Consumption and Production.

To achieve net-zero emissions, the university has committed to implementing specific strategic initiatives focused on reducing its environmental footprint:

  1. Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: Implementing initiatives focused on energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energy adoption.

  2. Waste Management: Improving waste management processes to reduce emissions associated with landfill and disposal.

  3. Research and Education: The campus will serve as a “living laboratory” for research and application directly supporting climate resilience and carbon neutrality. The university is also committed to expanding educational programs that raise awareness of environmental issues and equip future generations with the necessary knowledge and skills.

This commitment is viewed as a “shared journey,” requiring cooperation with government bodies, local authorities, and international partners, confirming that the process is coordinated across multiple sectors.
