17.4.2 – Does your university as a body have dedicated courses (full degrees, or electives) that address sustainability and the SDGs?

SDG 17.4.2: Dedicated Courses Addressing Sustainability and the SDGs

The University of El Oued demonstrates its commitment to fostering specialized sustainability expertise through its academic portfolio, offering dedicated, high-level degree programs that align directly with global targets for environmental stewardship, public health, and clean energy transition. These programs constitute formal, specialized academic pathways, thus meeting the indicator’s requirement for cataloged courses not intended for the entire university.

Dedicated Master’s Programs in Sustainability

The University actively offers at least four distinct Master of Science (MSc) programs focused exclusively on core SDG themes:

  1. Master of Science (MSc) in Renewable Energy in Mechanics (SDG 7 & 13)

This program, offered through the Faculty of Technology, provides a specialized route in sustainable energy systems. The curriculum is designed to solve energy challenges and prepare graduates for careers in low-carbon energy industries. The core focus includes training for professions related to thermal, solar, hydraulic, geothermal, and wind power plants, confirming the University’s dedication to developing the technical human capital necessary for the national energy transition.

  1. Master of Science (MSc) in Biodiversity and Plant Physiology (SDG 15 & 13)

This program provides a specialized academic pathway in environmental and biological sustainability. Students receive comprehensive training in plant biology and ecology, covering how the plant organism interacts with its biotic and abiotic environment, directly supporting SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). It also trains students in the sustainable exploitation of natural substances, supporting regional resource security (SDG 2).

  1. Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Toxicology (SDG 3 & 12)

This specialized Master’s course provides high-level training focusing on pharmacology, toxicology, and biochemical analysis. The curriculum is essential for graduates seeking careers in basic and applied research in pharmaco-toxicology and medical biochemistry, directly supporting SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by focusing on human health and safety, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by focusing on the safe management and testing of chemical substances.

  1. Master of Science (MSc) in Finance and International Trade (SDG 8 & 1)

This program, offered through the Faculty of Economic Sciences, focuses on the mechanisms of global development and economic inclusion. The curriculum includes specialized components such as Islamic Finance (which deals with charitable giving and social welfare, directly linked to SDG 1: No Poverty) and Emerging Markets and Economic Growth (directly supporting SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth). This program ensures that students specializing in finance and trade receive education applicable to addressing poverty, financial inclusion, and sustainable global economic strategies.

The provision of these four specialized degrees confirms the University’s dedication to building advanced human capacity across key economic, environmental, technological, and public health fields required for a resilient and sustainable future.
